Woodlands suffered their third defeat of the season after going down with a 3-1 scoreline against Tampines Rovers at the Clementi Stadium last Saturday.

The resounding victory ensured that the league leaders continued their fine unbeaten run while the visitors were left shell-shocked by Shariff Samat's sending-off.

S. League Preview: Round 10

Unbeaten in eight games and dropping only two points so far, Tampines Rovers will play Woodlands Wellington at Clementi Stadium on the weekend. Tampines continue their amazing run of form and are looking seemingly unstoppable. Woodlands, on the other hand, have been consistently inconsistent in their performances every week.

Tampines will be without their defensive Japanese duo. Kunihiro Yamashita is out after a surgery for his shoulder and looks to be out for about two months while Seiji Kaneko picked up an injury in the previous match. Attack-wise, the Stags can depend on Khairul Amri and Sead Hadzibulic, who both scored in their 2-1 win against Albirex.

Khalid Hamdaoui has seen a drop in his performances after being awarded the Player of the Month accolade. Coach Salim Moin has even declared that he won’t hesitate to drop Hamdaoui if he fails to perform. If that were to be true then Woodlands would have to rely upon the likes of Chang Jo Yoon and Moon Soon Ho to lift up the team.

S.League Team Of The Week

It's always a special occasion when a player comes up against his former side, and it was the same for Ang Zhiwei on Thursday when he took on Geylang, who he played for just last season.

Given more freedom to push forward given coach Salim Moin had opted for a 3-5-2 formation, the fleet-footed wing-back put his attacking instincts to good use all caused problems for Jalal down the right, but also helped out in defence when Woodlands were on the back foot.

Congratulations to Ang Zhiwei for being part of this team. Well done!

Frustrated Woodlands Rue Wasted Chances

It was a second draw on the trot for Woodlands Wellington as they were held to a goalless stalemate against Geylang International despite enjoying long spells of possession and effectively pushing the Eagles back into their own half.

Biased Refereeing Or Sheer Bad Luck?

There have been an awful lot of weird refereeing decisions in the S League Cup. Comical ones, outrageous ones, bizarre ones, decisions that were just plain wrong.

A good game was ruined by a bad refereeing decision.  During last night's game, it was bitterly frustrating for the players who had made so much effort and for their fans who had made so much noise, yet for so little reward.  The home fans kept chanting, kept hoping. A great occasion for a penalty was spoiled for the home fans.  Either we're witnessing a referee prodigy, or this call is so obviously bad, even a child could spot it.

If a player has a bad game he loses his place and I’d like to see more referees demoted when they have done their job badly.  One way to go about things would be to have someone in the stands watching the referee live, marking his performance, his decision making and his positional awareness. Then, when it comes to reading his match report he will have someone there to either agree or disagree with his reasons behind what he claims he did and did not see.

We all make mistakes, but we also tend to learn from them. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case with referees at the moment. One mistake in a game can be acceptable, especially when you consider the speed at which the game is played as well as the fact officials don’t have the luxury of replays.  But, if a referee makes more than one mistake and subsequently costs a side a result, then they should be made to face the consequences. When a player makes a mistake and mis-times a tackle he is punished, so why shouldn’t referees receive the same treatment?  After all, it is their mistakes that can prove just as costly to the outcome of a match as a player making a mistake and being sent off.

So unless some drastic changes are made to the way referee’s performances are analysed and even the introduction of some extra help from the stands, teams, players, managers and fans will continue to feel hard done by each and every week.

"If there is a thing our referees do best, is to spoil a beautiful  game." ~ Referees, prove to us this remark is wrong!  You can flash a red card to send a player off the pitch, can we do the same to you if you performed below par?

Rams And Eagles Share Spoils

There were no goals at Woodlands Stadium as on Thursday evening as Woodlands Wellington and Geylang International played out to an exciting goalless draw. It was also a dress rehearsal for both sides as they will meet again in the opening round of the 2013 RHB Singapore Cup.
